3toZero announce the publication of the radical new approach to construction project management - Technology Clusters

Developed through fundamental research and tried and tested in practice the Technology Cluster approach delivers zero accident, zero defect and zero delay construction.  This new publication sets out the strategy and implementation steps to achieve a radically different production and delivery environment.  It is the framework for effective and productive construction.  Each cluster provides for a integrated delivery approach along the total supply chain that when integrated with the other clusters enables the effective management of the total project delivery.  This book is aimed at transforming the production organisations of construction.  Its readership will be: clients, consultants, contractors, sub contractors, specialist contractors, lecturers, teachers and students.  In fact anyone who has ambitions to transform their project delivery processes now or in the future.

Advanced Construction Management - the 3toZero approach

The construction industry is one of the most exciting and dynamic industries in the world.  It is one of the largest single industries and its output effects everyone.  The built environment affects our everyday living.  It is also one of the most inventive and experimental.  However, it is not a linear development process.  Innovations occur somewhat randomly and in a range of locations.  What we have done is to capture those innovations and put them into a coherent story.

Effective construction management is achieved by understanding the relationship between technology, organisation and culture.  The Technology Cluster approach integrates all three elements and provides the coherent strategy to achieve the objectives of zero accidents, zero delay and zero defects.

The multiple elements necessary to develop the Technology Cluster approach are set out in our iBook.  Each element is described in detail.  We set out the case for the need to develop a new approach to the management of construction projects.  We have called it advanced construction management because the approach builds on years of development and whilst when integrated is a radical approach, many of the parts are in common practice, just not linked into a coherent model. The concept of the Technology Cluster is defined together with the reasoning as to why this is the next significant development in construction management thinking and practice.   The Management Cluster is introduced as the key collaborative relationship between client, design and production for effective decision making.  An essential characteristic of modern construction is to achieve effective communication across all parties to speed decision making and the necessary structures and roles are set out.  Possibly the most radical development is that of workplace design.  The Work Area Control discipline to set up and manage a clean, safe workplace to achieve high levels of productivity is described.  These chapters set out the strategy for creating the new construction environment.  The following chapters set out the implementation process.

Technology clusters

By dividing a project into technologically complete sets the design and engineering of the sets can be undertaken as one to achieve high value inputs from the contributing organisations to the design process thus ensuring the value in the design and at the same time bringing the production issues to the table.

Supply Chain organisation

Modern construction comprises thousands of components each with a complex design, manufacture and instal chain of activity which must be co-ordinated and integrated.  The supply chain to achieve successful integration to ensure no defects and delay must have an effective organisation within the technology cluster framework.

Work Area Control

Work area control is all about creating the right environment for safe, fault free assembly delivered every day by every team.  The approach is designed for right first time assembly with no accidents, rework or repeat activity.   By designing the workspace around the team’s operation the team can be given the responsibility for the total management of the work and its completion.   The workspace is controlled with minimal interference so the team can be highly motivated during the whole period and take pride in the completed work as they own the space.
